(WBOY) – West Virginia State Parks are encouraging people to spend the first day of the New Year outdoors on one of their Day one hikes.
Eight West Virginia state parks, including three in north central West Virginia, will host guided hikes on January 1 as part of a national initiative led by America’s State Parks.
For each hike, warm clothes and sturdy shoes are necessary. Water and snacks are recommended for longer hikes, and items such as binoculars are welcome.
North Central West Virginia
Blackwater Falls State Park – Tucker County
Blackwater offers a hike to scenic lookouts. Participants will hike the Pendleton Trace Trail to Pendleton Point Overlook, then continue along the Spudder Track and return to the Nature Center along the Gee Haw Ski Trail. This day one hike will meet at the Nature Center at 10:30 am. The activity should last an hour and a half and cover about a mile and a half of the hike.
North Bend State Park – Ritchie County
Hikers for the North Bend Day 1 hike should arrive at Hut # 3 at 10 a.m. The hike is estimated to be around two hours. Participants will receive a day one hiking patch.
Tygart Lake State Park – Taylor County
Tygart Lake hikers are expected to meet at the State Park Campground at 10 am on New Years Day. The two-mile hike will follow the School Bus Loop Trail, which is mostly flat terrain. Hikers who complete the trail will receive a day one hiking patch.
Across West Virginia
Cacapon State Park – Morgan County
In Cacapon, beginner hikers will have the choice between three different routes:
- Hovermale Trail: an easy two-mile hike near a homestead and a meandering stream
- Cabin Loop Trail: an easy one-mile loop
- Laurel Trail: a moderate 2.5 mile hike with mountain and lake views
The three hikes will meet at the Center de la nature at 10 a.m.
Cass State Park Scenic Railroad – Pocahontas County
Cass hikers should meet at the Cass Company Store at 1 p.m. for a hike along the Greenbrier River Trail. The hike should be about three miles down and back on mostly flat terrain. Participants will receive a day one hiking patch.
Chief Logan State Park – Logan County
In Chief Logan, hikers are scheduled to meet at the museum at 10 a.m. for a mile-long hike on the Cliffside Trail, which is suitable for all ages but is close to drop-off points in some areas. Hikers will receive a day one hiking patch at the end of the activity.
Pipestem Resort State Park – Mercer / Summers counties
Pipestem’s day one hike will be on the cart path from holes one through nine of the 18-hole championship golf course. Hikers should meet at the Golf Pro Shop at 1 p.m. Cocoa and cookies will be available after the hike, and hike completers will receive a Day 1 hike patch.
Twin Falls State Park – Wyoming County
At Twin Falls, the day one hike will begin at 1 p.m. Hikers must meet at the campground to participate in this guided Cliffside Trail hike. Hikers will earn a day one hiking patch.
