BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Tailgating grounds near Lane Stadium are crowded as Hokie fans crowd Blacksburg.
According to Virginia Tech, tickets are sold out, for what many call the biggest game of the season, against the “Fighting Irish” or Notre Dame.
People from Indiana, Texas and North Carolina flock to campus to watch the fierce game.
“Oh, this is gonna be so much fun. We have been looking forward to this game all year. We bought season tickets just for this game, ”said Jonathan Cromer, a Virginia Tech fan.
Cromer said that, like many other campers, they thought it was smart to avoid traffic. However, when they arrived, several of the lots were already filled with trailers.
Even hotels have told fans all rooms have been booked for months, but that hasn’t stopped some Hokie fans.
“Because all the hotels were picked up and the hostel was booked, we said let’s take a motorhome and go have fun,” Virginia Tech fan Kurt Kostur said.
Even with the influx of Hokies on campus, they’re not alone. Some Notre Dame fans also arrived early, setting up their camp.
“I’m from Texas so our trip started a few days ago. Hit DC, came in its place, and we left this morning, ”said Fighting Irish fan Geoffrey Cislo.
Her friend Shannon O’Toole, a proud Irishman, said their history of loving Notre Dame dates back 50 years, when they watched their games all the time.
Now they are diehard fans.
“This morning we left Leesburg, everything was loaded at 5:30 pm and we started heading around 7:00 pm. Last week was a disappointment. Hopefully they bounce back and play a tough game, ”O’Toole said.
